JeffreyLehman:Research University Carries out Scientific Research to Create Public Welfare
Update:Jan 31st, 2013

Jeffrey Lehman, CEO of New York University Shanghai, noted in 2012 Pujiang Innovation Forum that the scientific research done by the research university is not a 100% equivalent to its commercialized corporate counterpart because the former aims at creating public welfare in a broader sense.

He also refuted some views which he considered wrong. For example, the research university is not supposed to lay emphasis on basic research or key applied research. Instead, a majority of its research capability should directly go to commercial innovation. Lehman thought that such kind of view, in practice, actually aimed at pushing universities to try even harder in “technological transfer” and “commercial incubation”.
